Optical coatings produced in large area by R2R vacuum web coating have traditionally been limited to relatively simple optical designs consisting of approximately 10 or fewer layers due to limitations in vacuum web coating equipment. This paper reviews case studies of sophisticated, many-layered optical coatings produced by roll to roll vacuum deposition, made possible by advances in web handling systems, reactive process control, and automation. Optical designs studied include a beam splitter and a hot mirror, produced via continuous roll to roll vacuum web coating on an industrial web coater.
