Despite being a century-old technology, optical coating comprises only a handful of types. Here, I introduce a new class of optical coatings exhibiting photonic Fano resonance, termed Fano-resonant optical coatings (FROCs). FROCs consist of just 4 thin layers, yet they outperform coatings that require orders of magnitude more layers and thickness. I will also discuss a range of applications enabled by FROCs’ superior properties, including beam splitter filters that transmit and reflect the same color, full-gamut high-purity structural colors, and efficient solar energy harvesting systems.
